For this blog post, I am going to answer the Creative Critical Reflection questions. These questions are set to make us think deep about our magazine. Here are my answers:

  • #1: How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

To answer this question, I decided to make a short interview, talking about how my magazine challenges conventions and represents social groups or issues. SCRIPT:

    • Isa: Hello! Today we are here with Jeronimo Castano. Could you please tell us a little bit about your magazine?

    • Jero: Thank you for having me! Well my magazine is called FULL TIME, and its a sports magazine, which is supposed to provide football players who want to make it to the pro leagues a guide on helpful tips and recommendations that they could incorporate into their daily routines and their future journey.

    • Isa: Oh cool! I have your magazine here, could you give me a summary of your main cover line, “BEYOND THE PITCH”.

    • Jero: of course, basically my main article talks about the routines of players inside and outside the football field. Specifically, the importance of recovery, player rituals before and after training, and their eating habits.

    • Isa: wow, sounds pretty interesting! But let me ask you the important question. How does your product use or challenge conventions?

    • Jero: Well my product comes with the usual coverlines, masthead, skyline, so it does not really challenge any conventions. However, when you look at the design of the magazine, you could tell that there is the one main image and thats it. Usually in football magazines, they have a main image with other smaller cutouts on the side, or multiple main images in the center all doing their independent actions, this is a way in which my magazine challenges conventions.

    • Isa: Oh okay, so there isn’t really anything in common, design wise?

    • Jero: Well, Even though my magazine only has 1 main image, the player shown is in action. This is a common convention in football magazines as they usually show multiple players in an action shot kicking a ball, or running up and down the football pitch.

    • Isa: Interesting. So who is your magazine targeted towards?

    • Jero: Since my magazine is about football, the main audience would be teens and young adults who have an interest in football. Mainly those who are aspiring athletes.

    • Isa: Okay, so how does your magazine represent social issues or groups?

    • Jero: Due to my magazine being centered around sports, it has a limit to what social issues or social groups it could represent. However, my product highlights players as individuals with routines, challenges, and personal priorities -- not just as sports icons. It represents them as part of a group that also deals with high pressure and public expectations, while also having to manage their mental health, recovery, and self-discipline. By focusing on their everyday life, it challenges the stereotype that athletes are always confident and unstoppable. It also helps to bring awareness to burnout and the importance of mental health in competitive environments, which are often overlooked in traditional sports magazines.

    • Isa: That's very interesting, thank you for coming out for the interview. Thank you for watching.

  • #2: How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?

For this question, I answered it by making a social media account that promotes my magazine with advertisements I made as the posts.

The main reason why I decided to do this was because, a social media accounts allows me to actively engage with my audience, allowing me to receive quick

feedback and, in the case there are any technical issues, I would quickly find out through comments or messages people send me. Furthermore, since social media is used by almost everyone around the world, making advertisements and sharing them to new, potential customers / audience will be easier then hanging out flyers.

  • #3: How did your production skills develop throughout this project? To show how my production skills developed throughout this project, I recorded my screen and recreated my Magazine Final Cover.

  • #4: How did you integrate technologies - software, hardware, and online - in this project? To answer this question, I decided to do a short podcast since this allowed me to better explain the software I used as I am easily able to apply pictures.

    CAPTIONS:

    • In this project, I used technologies like software, hardware, and online to bring this project to life. For writing, I used google docs to set up and plan my scripts / text. For formatting, I mainly stuck to Canva as it is the easiest app which allowed me to look at visuals or layout previews. Both of these apps allowed me to complete my article and all the writing I had to do. Canva specifically helped me do the designs for my cover, Table of contents, and double page spread. To edit however, I used Capcut, as it is an app I am familiar with and have plenty of experience. Hardware-wise, I used my camera to take the pictures, airdropping them to my personal Macbook when I was all done. I also used my phone to edit any photos or videos, like the interview video for question #1. For photos however, I used the filters provided by my phone to raise the quality of my pictures.  Furthermore, My macbook was used to write, make presentations, and add all elements to my blog posts. Online, I used Google to research player routines using websites and looking at other interviews on youtube. Google also helped me get inspiration for my own magazine, as I searched for online Sports Magazines. Similarly, I used Google to find the fonts which I used for my magazine. The website being https://www.fontspace.com/. Without these technologies, I can safely say that the creation of my magazine would not have been successful.

This blog really made me think on the purpose of my magazine and I am really happy with the results of all the videos and the text.
